CommitMe vs Finch for building habits
The bird is lovely. It has never once made you go to the gym.
Finch is built to be gentle and it is good at it. It never scolds, it counts the days you managed and it lets the rest go. For someone whose problem is being too hard on themselves, that is the right design and CommitMe would be the wrong app.
It is the wrong design for the opposite problem. If you already let yourself off easily, an app that does the same agrees with the part of you that quits. CommitMe puts other people in the loop. Habits you share are visible to a crew you invited, and a missed day costs a streak unless you banked pause days for it.
Neither is a better app. They fix opposite failure modes. Work out which one is yours.
| CommitMe | Finch | |
|---|---|---|
| Does anyone else see whether you logged it | Yes. A habit you share is visible to your crew, and they see whether today is logged. | No. Finch is private by design and there is no shared progress. |
| The group, and how you get one | A private crew you invite by link, five by default. Or a topic community you join, and build a crew out of the people there. | None. It is you and the bird. |
| A target the group works at together | A weekly target the crew hits together, set by the owner. Everyone who contributed gets XP when it lands. | No. There is no group, so there is nothing to work at together. |
| What happens when you miss | The streak survives if you have pause days. You earn one per four completions and can bank up to 30. | Nothing. The bird is not disappointed in you. |
| Money at stake | None. No money, no forfeit. | None. |
| Turns a vague goal into daily actions | Yes. A written goal comes back as milestones plus one habit for this week. | No. You choose the goals. |
| Chases you when you have not done it | Yes, twice over. Reminders at your local time and a warning in the evening when a streak is at risk, plus any of your crew can nudge you in one tap. | Nudges from the app. No person. |
| Shows you your own patterns | A heatmap of which days you actually log, and a breakdown of which part of the day you complete in, which appears once you have about ten completions. | Streaks and history. |
| Points, levels or badges | XP with a level multiplier, levels, and 24 badges across six categories and five rarities, awarded automatically. No characters, no gear, no economy. | Yes, and it is the product. You care for a bird that grows as you look after yourself. |
| Helps you review the week | A weekly reflection that arrives with the week already counted: which habits you hit against what you said, the completion rate, the streak and where each goal stands. | Yes, in its own way. Daily mood check-ins and reflection prompts, aimed at how you feel rather than at what you completed. |
| Platform | Web and installable to the home screen. No App Store or Play Store listing. | iOS and Android. |
| Price | Free. One crew on the free tier. No paid tier is live. | Free to download, with an optional subscription sold in the app. Finch does not publish a public pricing page. |
| What Finch is better at | — | Mental health framing, and the whole self-care surface. Mood logging, breathing exercises, reflection prompts, and a tone CommitMe does not attempt. |
Use Finch instead if
the thing you need is to be kinder to yourself. That is the opposite of this.
